The Kentucky Derby brought in a new season of events that include cocktails starting about noon and lasting until that time. But as fun as drinking champagne at a wedding reception or beer at a baseball game often is, starting early can certainly have its downfalls. “Because daytime drinking often accompanies a special occasion, we tend to treat it differently, giving it that ‘oh just this one time’ quality and setting aside the normal precautions that we usually follow,” admits Sue Stanley, a Tier 4 trainer in Tribeca.
Allow someone else to trip over themselves or slur their words this time around, and follow a few professional tips to find your way through drinking season with your health– and pride– still in your control.
Stop The Sugar
Alex Zimmerman, T4 National Manager at Equinox, advises you by saying it’s time to avoid the dessert area. Since your body works extra hard to metabolize alcohol, giving it sugar to metabolize on top of that will often make it even harder for your body. The reason being is that alcohol disrupts your ability to maintain good water levels. When your body tries to get rid of sugar, it responds with an increase in bathroom breaks and dehydration along with it—only strengthening similar effects of alcohol.
Your body can only process one serving of alcohol every hour, says Cassie Kippert, Fitness Manager, Tier 4 Coach and Registered Dietician. While that fact is true during the day or at night, starting early can significantly increase the amount of time you spend sippin’ on brewskies. If you go past the one drink per one hour rate of consumption, you can expect to have a rising blood alcohol level, a decreasing hydration status, and worsening judgement calls, Kippert says. For clearer understanding, one serving of alcohol is equal to just 12 oz of beer, five oz of wine, or 1.5 oz (a shot) of liquor.
